feat: add PKCE option to generic OAuth2 / OIDC identity providers (#9373)
# Which Problems Are Solved

Some OAuth2 and OIDC providers require the use of PKCE for all their
clients. While ZITADEL already recommended the same for its clients, it
did not yet support the option on the IdP configuration.

# How the Problems Are Solved

- A new boolean `use_pkce` is added to the add/update generic OAuth/OIDC
endpoints.
- A new checkbox is added to the generic OAuth and OIDC provider
templates.
- The `rp.WithPKCE` option is added to the provider if the use of PKCE
has been set.
- The `rp.WithCodeChallenge` and `rp.WithCodeVerifier` options are added
to the OIDC/Auth BeginAuth and CodeExchange function.
- Store verifier or any other persistent argument in the intent or auth
request.
- Create corresponding session object before creating the intent, to be
able to store the information.
- (refactored session structs to use a constructor for unified creation
and better overview of actual usage)

Here's a screenshot showing the URI including the PKCE params:

feat(api): allow Device Authorization Grant using custom login UI (#9387)
# Which Problems Are Solved

The OAuth2 Device Authorization Grant could not yet been handled through
the new login UI, resp. using the session API.
This PR adds the ability for the login UI to get the required
information to display the user and handle their decision (approve with
authorization or deny) using the OIDC Service API.

# How the Problems Are Solved

- Added a `GetDeviceAuthorizationRequest` endpoint, which allows getting
the `id`, `client_id`, `scope`, `app_name` and `project_name` of the
device authorization request
- Added a `AuthorizeOrDenyDeviceAuthorization` endpoint, which allows to
approve/authorize with the session information or deny the request. The
identification of the request is done by the `device_authorization_id` /
`id` returned in the previous request.
- To prevent leaking the `device_code` to the UI, but still having an
easy reference, it's encrypted and returned as `id`, resp. decrypted
when used.
- Fixed returned error types for device token responses on token
endpoint:
- Explicitly return `access_denied` (without internal error) when user
denied the request
  - Default to `invalid_grant` instead of `access_denied`
- Explicitly check on initial state when approving the reqeust
- Properly handle done case (also relates to initial check)
- Documented the flow and handling in custom UIs (according to OIDC /
SAML)

# Additional Changes

- fixed some typos and punctuation in the corresponding OIDC / SAML
guides.
- added some missing translations for auth and saml request

# Additional Context

- closes #6239

feat: permission check on OIDC and SAML service session API (#9304)
# Which Problems Are Solved

Through configuration on projects, there can be additional permission
checks enabled through an OIDC or SAML flow, which were not included in
the OIDC and SAML services.

# How the Problems Are Solved

Add permission check through the query-side of Zitadel in a singular SQL
query, when an OIDC or SAML flow should be linked to a SSO session. That
way it is eventual consistent, but will not impact the performance on
the eventstore. The permission check is defined in the API, which
provides the necessary function to the command side.

# Additional Changes

Added integration tests for the permission check on OIDC and SAML
service for every combination.
Corrected session list integration test, to content checks without
ordering.
Corrected get auth and saml request integration tests, to check for
timestamp of creation, not start of test.

perf: role permissions in database (#9152)
# Which Problems Are Solved

Currently ZITADEL defines organization and instance member roles and
permissions in defaults.yaml. The permission check is done on API call
level. For example: "is this user allowed to make this call on this
org". This makes sense on the V1 API where the API is permission-level
shaped. For example, a search for users always happens in the context of
the organization. (Either the organization the calling user belongs to,
or through member ship and the x-zitadel-orgid header.

However, for resource based APIs we must be able to resolve permissions
by object. For example, an IAM_OWNER listing users should be able to get
all users in an instance based on the query filters. Alternatively a
user may have user.read permissions on one or more orgs. They should be
able to read just those users.

# How the Problems Are Solved

## Role permission mapping

The role permission mappings defined from `defaults.yaml` or local
config override are synchronized to the database on every run of
`zitadel setup`:

- A single query per **aggregate** builds a list of `add` and `remove`
actions needed to reach the desired state or role permission mappings
from the config.
- The required events based on the actions are pushed to the event
store.
- Events define search fields so that permission checking can use the
indices and is strongly consistent for both query and command sides.

The migration is split in the following aggregates:

- System aggregate for for roles prefixed with `SYSTEM`
- Each instance for roles not prefixed with `SYSTEM`. This is in
anticipation of instance level management over the API.

## Membership

Current instance / org / project membership events now have field table
definitions. Like the role permissions this ensures strong consistency
while still being able to use the indices of the fields table. A
migration is provided to fill the membership fields.

## Permission check

I aimed keeping the mental overhead to the developer to a minimal. The
provided implementation only provides a permission check for list
queries for org level resources, for example users. In the `query`
package there is a simple helper function `wherePermittedOrgs` which
makes sure the underlying database function is called as part of the
`SELECT` query and the permitted organizations are part of the `WHERE`
clause. This makes sure results from non-permitted organizations are
omitted. Under the hood:

- A Pg/PlSQL function searches for a list of organization IDs the passed
user has the passed permission.
- When the user has the permission on instance level, it returns early
with all organizations.
- The functions uses a number of views. The views help mapping the
fields entries into relational data and simplify the code use for the
function. The views provide some pre-filters which allow proper index
usage once the final `WHERE` clauses are set by the function.

fix: set correct owner on project grants (#9089)
# Which Problems Are Solved

In versions previous to v2.66 it was possible to set a different
resource owner on project grants. This was introduced with the new
resource based API. The resource owner was possible to overwrite using
the x-zitadel-org header.

Because of this issue project grants got the wrong resource owner,
instead of the owner of the project it got the granted org which is
wrong because a resource owner of an aggregate is not allowed to change.

# How the Problems Are Solved

- The wrong owners of the events are set to the original owner of the
project.
- A new event is pushed to these aggregates `project.owner.corrected`
- The projection updates the owners of the user grants if that event was
written

# Additional Changes

The eventstore push function (replaced in version 2.66) writes the
correct resource owner.

feat(OIDC): add back channel logout (#8837)
# Which Problems Are Solved

Currently ZITADEL supports RP-initiated logout for clients. Back-channel
logout ensures that user sessions are terminated across all connected
applications, even if the user closes their browser or loses
connectivity providing a more secure alternative for certain use cases.

# How the Problems Are Solved

If the feature is activated and the client used for the authentication
has a back_channel_logout_uri configured, a
`session_logout.back_channel` will be registered. Once a user terminates
their session, a (notification) handler will send a SET (form POST) to
the registered uri containing a logout_token (with the user's ID and
session ID).

- A new feature "back_channel_logout" is added on system and instance
level
- A `back_channel_logout_uri` can be managed on OIDC applications
- Added a `session_logout` aggregate to register and inform about sent
`back_channel` notifications
- Added a `SecurityEventToken` channel and `Form`message type in the
notification handlers
- Added `TriggeredAtOrigin` fields to `HumanSignedOut` and
`TerminateSession` events for notification handling
- Exported various functions and types in the `oidc` package to be able
to reuse for token signing in the back_channel notifier.
- To prevent that current existing session termination events will be
handled, a setup step is added to set the `current_states` for the
`projections.notifications_back_channel_logout` to the current position

- [x] requires https://github.com/zitadel/oidc/pull/671

# Additional Changes

- Updated all OTEL dependencies to v1.29.0, since OIDC already updated
some of them to that version.
- Single Session Termination feature is correctly checked (fixed feature
mapping)

# Additional Context

- closes https://github.com/zitadel/zitadel/issues/8467

# Which Problems Are Solved

Milestones used existing events from a number of aggregates. OIDC
session is one of them. We noticed in load-tests that the reduction of
the oidc_session.added event into the milestone projection is a costly
business with payload based conditionals. A milestone is reached once,
but even then we remain subscribed to the OIDC events. This requires the
projections.current_states to be updated continuously.

# How the Problems Are Solved

The milestone creation is refactored to use dedicated events instead.
The command side decides when a milestone is reached and creates the
reached event once for each milestone when required.

# Additional Changes

In order to prevent reached milestones being created twice, a migration
script is provided. When the old `projections.milestones` table exist,
the state is read from there and `v2` milestone aggregate events are
created, with the original reached and pushed dates.

perf(milestones): remove legacy token event reducer (#8747)
# Which Problems Are Solved

Since the optiimzation of the token endpoint, we longer push the
`user.token.added` event. However, the milestone projection keeps
quering for it, including a payload query.

This incured a static waste of DB resources.

# How the Problems Are Solved

Remove the `user.token.added` event reducer from the milestone
projection

perf(oidc): nest position clause for session terminated query (#8738)
# Which Problems Are Solved

Optimize the query that checks for terminated sessions in the access
token verifier. The verifier is used in auth middleware, userinfo and
introspection.

# How the Problems Are Solved

The previous implementation built a query for certain events and then
appended a single `PositionAfter` clause. This caused the postgreSQL
planner to use indexes only for the instance ID, aggregate IDs,
aggregate types and event types. Followed by an expensive sequential
scan for the position. This resulting in internal over-fetching of rows
before the final filter was applied.

![Screenshot_20241007_105803](https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/f2d91976-be87-428b-b604-a211399b821c)

Furthermore, the query was searching for events which are not always
applicable. For example, there was always a session ID search and if
there was a user ID, we would also search for a browser fingerprint in
event payload (expensive). Even if those argument string would be empty.

This PR changes:

1. Nest the position query, so that a full `instance_id, aggregate_id,
aggregate_type, event_type, "position"` index can be matched.
2. Redefine the `es_wm` index to include the `position` column.
3. Only search for events for the IDs that actually have a value. Do not
search (noop) if none of session ID, user ID or fingerpint ID are set.

New query plan:

perf(cache): pgx pool connector (#8703)
# Which Problems Are Solved

Cache implementation using a PGX connection pool.

# How the Problems Are Solved

Defines a new schema `cache` in the zitadel database.
A table for string keys and a table for objects is defined.
For postgreSQL, tables are unlogged and partitioned by cache name for
performance.

Cockroach does not have unlogged tables and partitioning is an
enterprise feature that uses alternative syntax combined with sharding.
Regular tables are used here.

fix: correctly create SMTP provider list (#8724)
# Which Problems Are Solved

https://github.com/zitadel/zitadel/pull/8545 incorrectly created the
list of current smtp providers, if an SMTP provider was changed, that
was created before https://github.com/zitadel/zitadel/pull/6932 /
[v2.50.0](https://github.com/zitadel/zitadel/releases/tag/v2.50.0)).
This led to problems when trying to send emails to users (email
verification and OTP email).

fix(handler): optimise snapshot hanlding (#8652)
# Which Problems Are Solved

There are cases where not all statements of multiExec are succeed. This
leads to inconsistent states. One example is [LDAP
IDPs](https://github.com/zitadel/zitadel/issues/7959).

If statements get executed only partially this can lead to inconsistent
states or even break projections for objects which might not were
correctly created in a sub table.

This behaviour is possible because we use
[`SAVEPOINTS`](https://www.postgresql.org/docs/current/sql-savepoint.html)
during each statement of a multiExec.

# How the Problems Are Solved

SAVEPOINTS are only created at the beginning of an exec function not
during every execution like before. Additionally `RELEASE` or `ROLLBACK`
of `SAVEPOINTS` are only used when needed.

perf(oidc): disable push of user token meta-event (#8691)
# Which Problems Are Solved

When executing many concurrent authentication requests on a single
machine user, there were performance issues. As the same aggregate is
being searched and written to concurrently, we traced it down to a
locking issue on the used index.
We already optimized the token endpoint by creating a separate OIDC
aggregate.

At the time we decided to push a single event to the user aggregate, for
the user audit log. See [technical advisory
10010](https://zitadel.com/docs/support/advisory/a10010) for more
details.

However, a recent security fix introduced an additional search query on
the user aggregate, causing the locking issue we found.

# How the Problems Are Solved

Add a feature flag which disables pushing of the `user.token.v2.added`.
The event has no importance and was only added for informational
purposes on the user objects. The `oidc_session.access_token.added` is
the actual payload event and is pushed on the OIDC session aggregate and
can still be used for audit trail.

# Additional Changes

- Fix an event mapper type for
`SystemOIDCSingleV1SessionTerminationEventType`

# Additional Context

aggregate

feat: Add Twilio Verification Service (#8678)
# Which Problems Are Solved
Twilio supports a robust, multi-channel verification service that
notably supports multi-region SMS sender numbers required for our use
case. Currently, Zitadel does much of the work of the Twilio Verify (eg.
localization, code generation, messaging) but doesn't support the pool
of sender numbers that Twilio Verify does.

# How the Problems Are Solved
To support this API, we need to be able to store the Twilio Service ID
and send that in a verification request where appropriate: phone number
verification and SMS 2FA code paths.

This PR does the following:
- Adds the ability to use Twilio Verify of standard messaging through
Twilio
- Adds support for international numbers and more reliable verification
messages sent from multiple numbers
- Adds a new Twilio configuration option to support Twilio Verify in the
admin console
- Sends verification SMS messages through Twilio Verify
- Implements Twilio Verification Checks for codes generated through the
same

feat(storage): generic cache interface (#8628)
# Which Problems Are Solved

We identified the need of caching.
Currently we have a number of places where we use different ways of
caching, like go maps or LRU.
We might also want shared chaches in the future, like Redis-based or in
special SQL tables.

# How the Problems Are Solved

Define a generic Cache interface which allows different implementations.

- A noop implementation is provided and enabled as.
- An implementation using go maps is provided
  - disabled in defaults.yaml
  - enabled in integration tests
- Authz middleware instance objects are cached using the interface.

# Additional Changes

- Enabled integration test command raceflag
- Fix a race condition in the limits integration test client
- Fix a number of flaky integration tests. (Because zitadel is super
fast now!) 🎸 🚀

fix: correctly check user state (#8631)
# Which Problems Are Solved

ZITADEL's user account deactivation mechanism did not work correctly
with service accounts. Deactivated service accounts retained the ability
to request tokens, which could lead to unauthorized access to
applications and resources.

# How the Problems Are Solved

Additionally to checking the user state on the session API and login UI,
the state is checked on all oidc session methods resulting in a new
token or when returning the user information (userinfo, introspection,

feat: invite user link (#8578)
# Which Problems Are Solved

As an administrator I want to be able to invite users to my application
with the API V2, some user data I will already prefil, the user should
add the authentication method themself (password, passkey, sso).

# How the Problems Are Solved

- A user can now be created with a email explicitly set to false.
- If a user has no verified email and no authentication method, an
`InviteCode` can be created through the User V2 API.
  - the code can be returned or sent through email
- additionally `URLTemplate` and an `ApplicatioName` can provided for
the email
- The code can be resent and verified through the User V2 API
- The V1 login allows users to verify and resend the code and set a
password (analog user initialization)
- The message text for the user invitation can be customized

# Additional Changes

- `verifyUserPasskeyCode` directly uses `crypto.VerifyCode` (instead of
`verifyEncryptedCode`)
- `verifyEncryptedCode` is removed (unnecessarily queried for the code
generator)

# Additional Context

- closes #8310
